PETER CASE & PAUL COLLINS REUNITE FOR A SPECIAL FULL-BAND SPRING 2012 TOUR

THEY WILL PERFORM SONGS FROM THEIR BACK CATALOGS WITH THE NERVES, THE BREAKAWAYS, THE PLIMSOULS AND THE BEAT!

THE PLIMSOULS TO RELEASE NEW BEACH TOWN CONFIDENTIAL LIVE LP NEXT TUESDAY ON ALIVE RECORDS!

Prior to Peter Case forming The Plimsouls in '78, he was part of two other influential mid-to-late '70s bands with Paul Collins  – The Nerves and The Breakaways (Paul would later go on to form his own highly-respected group, The Beat). Both Peter and Paul have enjoyed successful solo careers on record and on the road, but this spring they’ll once again be reunited for a very special North American tour. The two frontmen (along with bassist Timm Buechler and drummer Amos Pitsch) will be performing classic numbers by their bands, The Nerves and The Breakaways, as well as material by The Plimsouls and The Beat. For fans of energetic live performances, visceral rock & roll, and raucous, hook-laden songs that draw as much from the golden age of '60s pop as they do from punk, these shows should prove to be nothing short of nirvana.

The Plimsouls embodied rock & roll in its purest, undistilled form in the era when post-punk droned and new wave popped. Whether on record or onstage, this foursome unleashed urgent, white-hot performances of expertly constructed songs by frontman Peter Case that effortlessly straddled the perfection of British Invasion pop, the raucous, edgier side of early punk and garage rock, and the foundational elements of maximum R&B and wailing soul.

All of this is documented perfectly in one moment – or one night as the case may be - on the latest Plimsouls live album, Beach Town Confidential.  Recorded at the height of their onstage power at The Golden Bear in Huntington Beach, CA on August 13, 1983, this recording captures Peter Case, Eddie Muñoz, Dave Pahoa and Louie Ramírez ripping through these 16 tracks with a youthful and reckless abandon. Six of these songs have never been recorded before by The Plimsouls (“Making Time,” “Fall On You,” “The Price Of Love,” “Who’s Gonna Break The Ice?,” “Jumpin’ In The Night” and “You Can’t Judge A Book”), plus it also features the only live recordings of “Magic Touch,” “Oldest Story In The World” and “Hobo.”

The PlimsoulsBeach Town Confidential was produced by Peter Case and mixed by Peter and Andrew Bush. It will be released Feb. 7, 2012 though Alive Naturalsound Records on LTD. Edition Vinyl (w/ mp3 download card), CD and Digital formats. In addition, Alive is also producing an extremely limited run of 200 pink vinyl LPs (w/ download card) exclusive to mail orders only.

Tonight on “From Under the Basement” – New, upcoming, and a couple deep cut classics -

By ‘Rebel’ Rod Ames

Another great show lined up for you “real” music fans out there –

A classic from the 1973 Seatrain release, “Watch” – “Bloodshot Eyes”.

From Ruthie Foster’s new one (releases 1/31/12) “Let It Burn” – “Ring of Fire”.

Waylon Jennings & The 357’s, a song written by Shooter and Waylon Jennings – “I Found the Body”.

A new discovery via Review Shine and certainly a band I’ll be watching very closely - Countrycide and “She Kills Me” from their record "the rise and the fall".

One of my top picks from 2011- Lauderdale from their album “Moving On” – “Big Fish”.

A From Under the Basement favorite – Eric Hisaw from his 2002 “Never Could Walk the Line” album – “First Time Again”.

1975’s release of Neil Young and Crazy Horse’s “Zuma” – “Stupid Girl”.

Tab Benoit and Jimmy Thackery perform a version of a Neil Young tune – “Unknown Legend”.

From my pick for the numero uno album of 2011 13ghosts’ “Liar’s Melody” – “I Was Happy”.

Another fine record from last year was Fifth on the Floors’ “A Dark and Bloody Ground” – “Front Door Blues”.

A classic deep cut from The Allman Brothers Band – “Don’t Keep Me Wondering”.

Last year’s Candye Kane release of “Sister Vagabond” with Laura Chavez on guitar – “Everybody’s Gonna Love Somebody”.

George Thorogood with Charlie Musselwhite and “2120 South Michigan Avenue”.

One of my all time favorite duo’s – yes they were doing it long before Jack White and others who followed - Flat Duo Jets with Dexter Romweber - “Tidalwave”.

A brand new one from Otis Taylor called “Contraband” releases next month and I believe this may very well be a From Under the Basement exclusive – “Banjo Boogie Blues” – an incredible tune you will definitely want to stay up late for!

Robert Randolf abuses the hell out of a pedal steel – and I mean that in a very positive way. Just listen to him play on “Run For Your Life” – you’ll know exactly what I mean.

Drive-By Truckers from their live album "Alabama Whoop-Ass" - "Lookout Mountain"

A fun little tune from a little Kerrville home grown band called The 13th Floor Elevators and their tune “Down By the River”.

Finally, to wrap things up in From Under the Basement fashion, The Ozark Mountain Daredevils and “Chicken Train”.

Dig it baby!

It all gets started at 10 PM CST as “The Real Deal” changes over to “The Surreal Deal” on ‘Rebel’ Rod’s From Under the Basement on KOOK 93.5 in Junction, Texas and KERV 1230 AM in Kerrville, Texas !

RUTHIE FOSTER’S LET IT BURN ALBUM SHIPS TUESDAY, JANUARY 31

2012 U.S. tour under way, with Grammy Museum webcast on
 street date and SXSW appearance.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Ruthie Foster celebrates the release of her new album, Let It Burn, on Tuesday, January 31 with an appearance that night at Los Angeles’ Grammy Museum. The performance and interview there will be available to fans throughout the world on a web simulcast <http://www.yowie.com/videochat/5lx-ruthie-foster-live>. The event kicks off a tour that continues into late spring with stops in all major cities including Austin for SXSW (March 14–16). The initial dates are co-bills with acclaimed Mississippi singer-songwriter Paul Thorn.

The Grammy-nominated, Blues Music Award- and Austin Music Award-winning artist, who calls Texas home, recorded the new album at New Orleans’ Piety Street Studios with many of the city’s venerable musicians, resulting in an infusion of fresh spices into her already rich sonic gumbo.

The New Orleans players — the Funky Meters’ rhythm section of bassist George Porter Jr. and drummer Russell Batiste, guitarist Dave Easley, and renowned saxophonist James Rivers — collectively infuse the tracks with a groove-based, in-the-pocket vibe. The addition of Hammond B3 wizard Ike Stubblefield, who has toured and recorded with everyone from Curtis Mayfield to Eric Clapton, gives the album a jazzy organ-combo feel. Finally, legendary gospel singers the Blind Boys of Alabama and soul icon William Bell add extra depth to the project’s surprisingly diverse collection of cover songs and fresh originals.

Highlighting Foster’s strengths as an interpreter, Let It Burn features covers of an eclectic group of songs originally performed by the likes of Adele, The Black Keys, Los Lobos, Johnny Cash, The Band, Pete Seeger, Crosby, Stills & Nash, John Martyn, Robbie Robertson. The album also includes several new Ruthie Foster compositions.

Let It Burn smolders, sizzles and ignites with an intensity born from Foster’s vibrant voice and indelible presence. In an early review in the Los Angeles Times, critic Randall Roberts noted, “To call Ruthie Foster a blues singer is to miss a big chunk of her allure as a vocal stylist, one who draws from a range of influences on her deep, soulful Let It Burn.” Texas Music Magazine called the album “not only organic but revelatory,” and Blues Revue’s online BluesWax.com said, “Let It Burn can not be overlooked.”

Dead Fingers Self-Titled Debut Coming February 28th on Big Legal Mess/Fat Possum Records

They'll Celebrate With a Tour

Kate Taylor and Taylor Hollingsworth have joined hand in hand and formed a band.  Ladies and Gentlemen, Dead Fingers might just be what you've been waiting for!  In a time when guy-girl duos are becoming quite popular, this one is not just some gimmick, however perfect the timing and package may be.  You would almost think Kate was married to her manager, or a record label executive who has them acting like they were romantic just to sell tickets and albums. But in fact, this Alabama duo are recently married and the two just recorded their first self titled full length with Bruce Watson (RL Burnside, Junior Kimbrough, Iggy and the Stooges, AA Bondy), being released on Big Legal Mess/ Fat Possum Records on February 28, 2012. They are celebrating the release with a tour, the dates are below.

You might know Taylor from previous solo albums or bands but most likely from Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band. He was the guitar player who wrote and sang “Snake Hill” and “Air Mattress” on the album Outer South. If you've seen Maria Taylor play then you have most likely seen Kate in her band either playing keys, drums, or bass, and most importantly, harmonizing the soft beautiful back ground melodies.

Dead Fingers is an album that honors the classic sounds of rock n’ roll, piano, ringing guitars, frame songs that have a distinctly southern sense of place. The songwriting is brilliant, from gentle love songs about missing each other on tour (“Another Planet”)  to “4 Stone Coaches” which describes unspeakable loss. While some of the tunes have a spare, Americana vibe, but they’ll also throw down an ethereal, string-laden number like “Please Don’t Me Go” or the horn and piano backed “Against the River” which also sports a fiery distorted guitar lead. Kate and Taylor sing so beautifully together one would easily assume they’ve been performing together for years and years, but they actually started joining one another on stage in 2005 and began playing together around 2008 in what became Dead Fingers.  While they write songs separately, they come together to collaborate musically when they are complete. “The name came from a children’s hand trick I showed Taylor one night, and it just stuck…just seemed cool,” Kate explained.

January 2012

Happy new year friends. Glad to be getting back to it after some downtime over the holidays. We have two new releases this month and more coming from T. Tex Edwards, Churchwood, Chief Fuzzer, Los # 3 Dinners, El Pathos and Snowbyrd very soon. Let's have a look...

THE COPPER GAMINS EP, PLETHORA "RELOADED"

THE COPPER GAMINS
From the mountains of Mexico comes a band and sound guaranteed to surprise and delight. Melding such diverse inspirations as 1960s garage rock, the films of Charlie Chaplin and the folkloric field recordings of John Lomax, The Copper Gamins are the latest wrinkle in the guitar/drums duo trend that has yielded such star acts as The White Stripes and The Black Keys, yet at the same time something completely original and distinctive. It's raw and naïve music that rattles with inspiration and imagination, reminding of the unpolished fire of The Oblivians and the sly, obtuse nuance of Eugene Chadbourne and revelatory experimentalists The Residents, embodying both electrifying crackle and sweet romanticism. This five-track EP introduces a group that already sparked a buzz through the underground in their brief residence last year in Central Texas when the band literally lived in a blue garage. Look for a slew of dates starting in mid-February leading up to their appearance at SXSW 2012.

PIÑATA PROTEST
Plethora "Reloaded" is a unique response to the success of 2010's debut release by the San Antonio band that takes punk rock to the cantina and invests the wheezing old accordion with a new rock'n'roll potency: the same album kicked up more than a few notches by re-recording the bass and guitar tracks to reflect a great leap forward brought about by changes in the group personnel and its enhanced power and focus thanks to national touring. Hailed as "the tastiest norteño/rock recipe to date" by Alibi.com, Piñata Protest have been described as the "Mexican Dropkick Murphys" or "the love child of Flaco Jimenez and Sid Vicious," cannily rewiring both the Tex-Mex and punk traditions to create one of the most bracing new ripples in rock music's ongoing progression in recent memory. It's music that's as hot as jalepeño peppers and as satisfying as a plate of enchiladas. And "Reloaded" transforms Plethora as originally recorded into a collectors item. That's a two-for-one deal that's hard to refuse.
Piñata Protest is opening for The Adicts at The White Rabbit in San Antonio on Feb.2nd, is playing The Punx Picinic (link at left) will be featured on BMI's Latin Showcase at this year's SXSW Festival.

A Little Bit Psycho ... A Little Bit Western, The Frontier Circus (Max) - Ringleader Dan always manages to come across as authentically rock 'n' roll as payola and plane crashes. While his other experiments have sometimes been more admirable for audacity and attitude than the sounds produced, ALBP/ALBW is not only good, but potentially a great album, in the vein of Lester Bangs and the' Delinquents' Jook Savages on the Brazos or U2's Pop. Dan and his pseudonymous band (Victor el Valiente, Lightnin' Lou, Daredevil Dave and Red Neckerson, who has left the group)manage a steel-shaving sonic attack. Dan's singing - particularly on a cover of the 13th Floor Elevators' "You're Gonna Miss Me" - is better than it needs to be. They've got more to offer than great taste in covers.

Cargo Cult / Texas Biscuit Bombs
The Two-Headed Cobra split 2xLP(Modern City)
Cargo Cult was a band from Austin, TX. It featured Randy "Biscuit" Turner of the Big Boys and Duane Denison before he moved to Chicago to form The Jesus Lizard. After their first album, "Strange Men Bearing Gifts" on Touch and Go Records, they recorded demos for a second album in 1987, but broke up before the record materialized. These demos are available now for the first time.
In 2004 Biscuits put together the Texas Biscuit Bombs with Maximum Rock'n'Roll and Left Of The Dial writer David Ensminger. Their set list included many Texas Punk classics (Really Red's "Teaching You the Fear", The Dicks "Hate the Police", and of course many Big Boys numbers), as well as not-so-punk classics (ZZ Top, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Spencer Davis Group). This release includes 2 live sets recorded at Rudyard's Pub in Houston, Texas in 2004 and 2005. The second show being recorded just days before Biscuits untimely death on August, 18th 2005.

STEVIE SLOW DRUNKENStevie Tombstone
's 1st solo release in 8 years, Slow Drunken Waltz is fueled by folk, country, blues, and a few waltzes thrown in for good measure. A veteran and subliminal force in the roots/underground music scene for over 25 years, Tombstone has come full circle with these 9 selections he has mixed and self-produced. This EP runs the gambit from barroom poetry to borderline gospel. Stevie draws from life experience as well as delving into traditional themes. Recorded for the most part in his home studio /doublewide trailer in the Ozark Mountains, it features slight cameos by some of the finest players in the Eureka Springs area as well as his wife and bassist Killene Tombstone. The accompaniment offers just enough to color the songs that call for it. Painting a slightly darker picture than "7:30 am", this project offers stark tunes from a legitimate artist. The production is sparse and heartfelt reflecting the true feel of the folk and landscape of the mountains it was conceived in.
