Tonight on From Under the Basement - Special Guest Terri Sharp

By 'Rebel' Rod Ames

Terri Sharp has written and recorded with heavy hitters such as Don McLean, Hank Williams, Jr., Billy Joe Shaver, and many more over her illustrious career.

In 1987 two of her songs were on Don McLean’s album Love Tracks - "Can't Blame the  Train" (US country No. 49) and "Eventually".
Later, she penned the tune “Burning Hearts” with Billy Joe Shaver. Ms. Sharp has worked extensively with Nashville artists Aaron Tippin and Donny Kees as well.

In Don McLean’s 2007 biography by Alan Howard, The Don McLean Story: Killing Us Softly With His Songs, he referred to Terri Sharp as “one of the most talented songwriters on the Nashville scene”.

Around 1967 she moved to New Orleans to record with White Cliff Records. While there, she met celebrated musician, composer, producer, Allen Toussaint. It would be much easier to tell you who Mr. Toussaint has not worked with instead of who he has. There are just to many to list at this time. He and Ms. Sharp have remained friends to this day.

You get the picture. Ms. Sharp is a pretty heavy hitter by her own right.

Tonight, I am honored to have her as a guest on my show. Ms. Sharp will talk about her memorable career and what she is up to now. She is still very much into writing and recording, the majority of her work today in Spanish. Of course, she will be elaborating on that as well as her new CD.

Joining Terri Sharp in the studio will be Chris and Bill Booker. They are going to discuss the music portion of the upcoming Hunt Centennial Celebration in Hunt, Texas, where Mr. Shaver will be performing with Ms. Sharp and many others through out the day on May 19th.

Ms. Sharp will be performing a couple tunes live on the show.  The locals here in the Kerrville area may recognize the Bookers as two of the members of the Kerrville band, Exit 505. They will be performing at the Hunt Centennial as well.

The second hour is going to start out with a tribute to my good friend and colleague, Ray Bliss & Family and their Cat - five extremely cool tunes from the likes of Canned Heat, Memphis Slim, Satchmo (AKA Louis Armstrong for you youngsters), Carl Perkins, Billy Boy Arnold, and Blind PIg Record's, Contino.

We're going to wrap things up with a Cinco De Mayo celebration done "From Under the Basement" style! You'll hear tunes from Sir Doug, Joe King Carrasco, Texas Tornadoes, Steve Earl, ZZ Top and others.

It’s going to be a fun filled informative, and completely entertaining 80 minutes you are not going to want to miss. So tune in to "The Real Deal" on KOOK 93.5 in Junction and KERV 1230 AM in Kerrville as they so kindly turn the reins over to "The Surreal Deal". It all gets started at 8PM (Central). Don't forget - for you out of towners it also streams on the web!

See ya Under the Basement!

Starting my day out right with London's "Suburban Dirts"

Suburban Dirts (I think)
By 'Rebel' Rod Ames

You know, since I began blogging about music about five or so years ago it has been so gratifying.

I have been turned on to so many great musicians, received hundreds, possibly thousands of digital files and CD’s some good, some not so good, yet always indicative of extremely hard work, and every now and then, something very, very special.

Probably the most surprising thing has been the wonderful music that has arrived from across the pond. More specifically, from jolly old Great Britain. Jack Cade completely blew me away with his unique American sound; his voice is something special and fitting to his music like two pieces of a jigsaw puzzle.

Dave Woodcock and The Dead Comedians are another band that tapped into those American music roots and came up with something all their own, earning the first spot in my latest blog segment simply entitled, ‘Band To Watch”.

This morning I woke up to an email from a Mr. John Wheatley, asking with that legendary English politeness to listen to his band, “Suburban Dirts”. I cannot write about the band other than they have been around about a year and have opened for various bands across the British countryside. There was little to no bio that accompanied their Sound Cloud link.

Mr. Wheatley asked me to listen to this ten-song collection so that I may give him some feedback. I was, as always, in the mood for some good music, but was not prepared to hear the quality of music that was soon to emit from my computer’s Altec Lansing speakers.

Their music is heavily influenced by the likes of American music greats and legends Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Ryan Adams, Justin Townes Earl, and many others. You can hear these influences in this collection of tunes, but they do what great musicians do – they add their own particular flavor to the sound. In this case, the lead singer, who I will assume is Mr. Wheatley, resonates splendidly on every single tune.

From the first track, “Tacho Breakdown Blues (part II)", which was reminiscent to some very early ZZ Top to this Texas boy, to the Bob Dylanish-from-his-Blonde-on-Blonde-Highway-61-Revisted era sound of the final track, “Tacho Breakdown Blues (part I)", the listener’s ears are blessed with the sound of pure American Roots music, and they could not have book-ended the album any better than this. What lies in between these two superb bookends is some truly amazing music.

One thing for sure, Suburban Dirts has not only earned a “Band to Watch” spot on my blog; they have earned a spot on my radio program as well.

To Suburban Dirts – Thank you for making my day!

Suburban Dirt's music can be purchased via iTunes, Amazon and Spotify.

1776 Announce Debut LP, Spring Tour With The Dandy Warhols

Self Titled Album Out June 5th on Beat The World Records / The End Records

1776 are a rock band from the small logging town of Longview, Washington. They are Nigel Ledgerwood, Christopher Cook, Mitchell Rupe, and Zach Whiton. For the last two years they’ve have been part of The Dandy Warhols’ ‘Beat The World Records’ family and are releasing their debut album through Beat The World Records and The End Records on June 5th 2012.

Bands like The Rolling Stones, The Yardbirds, Sweet, The Seeds and The Kinks; as well as the legendary underground Portland bands of Dead Moon, The Wipers, and Napalm Beach inspire them. You can hear touches of their influences in their music, from the primal drumming to the wall of guitar riffs, and the unique melodies created by Ledgerwood.

They play Rock n’ Roll with distinctive vocal harmonies and guitar tones that are reflected in songs such as ‘I Won’t Be Your Prey’ with its trashy garage rock vibe; and Mick Ronson-ish riffs in ‘When You Go’. ‘Your Summit Will Expire’ is a doom waltz with heavy influence from Syd Barrett and early Pink Floyd.

They will be joining The Dandy Warhols on their upcoming tour of the US.
